Save Boundary Waters Petition

Copper mining in the boundary waters…. sign petition to stop it

Hello, here is something that I hope you will sign and share with everyone who cares about the boundary waters.

Copper mining by the Polymet corporation is threatening to destroy the water of northern Minnesota with Sulfide Mining. The things that you can do is get informed and use the link to petition the legislators regarding the up coming March 8th delivery of the petition.

 Points to consider:

Hard rock mining ( sulfide mining ) is considered by the EPA as the number one polluting mining practice.

The large open mines are 99% waste equal to 500 football fields 20 stories high and the clean up for other sites is $100 to $140 million.

The mining jobs will last 20 years while seriously impacting the boundary water tourism business an annual 17% of the state’s commerce forever.

The failures to control sufide has resulted in dead water zones in several states.

Financial assurance  of the mining industry is often inadequate leaving the tax payers to foot the bill. The industry has a high percentage of failure to control pollutants.

The national chamber of commerce is working to weaken the laws  to allow pollutant levels to go from 100 to 300 micrograms per liter. Yet there are indications that 50 micrograms is a serious health issue.
